Single Review: Donna Lewis “Without Love”

Without Love
Album: Now In A Minute
Year: 1996

Perhaps I Love You Always Forever was a fluke. From the shoddy, overproduced new single Without Love, it appears to be so.

Without Love, in which she sings about her boyfriend neglecting her, is well written, but the music does not fit. Lyrics such as “Empty gestures while away the hours/Promises, promises sealed with a kiss/Please acknowledge it’s me that you miss” are then backed up with the same cheerfulness that accompanied her first single.

Lewis’ child-like vocals betray her. When she tries to be belt towards the end, it’s forced. She’s limited as a singer and doesn’t have vocal ability to go beyond her range. At times, she is straining. Since her voice is sweet and innocent, she cannot sell irritation or disappointment very well.
