Single Review: Coldplay “God Put A Smile On Your Face”

God Put A Smile On Your Face
Album: A Rush of Blood to the Head
Year: 2003

People can fall from their own self-made pedestals with dignity in Coldplay’s “God Put A Smile On Your Face.”

Nobody knows what’s going to happen in their lives but Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, believes he took the wrong direction. (“Where do we go, nobody knows/I’ve got a say, I’m on my way down”). However, his faith gave him the ability to deal with his downfall with poise. He will attempt to change his life for the better, though.(“God give me style and give me grace/God put a smile upon my face”).

He didn’t set limits and became selfish, which caused him to destroy a relationship with someone he loved. (“Where do we go to draw the line?/I’ve got a say, I wasted all your time, honey honey”). Now that he has this awful person he never thought he’d be, he wants to know what people find in themselves to be kind and gracious. (“Where do I go to fall from grace?/God put a smile upon your face, yeah”). Nonetheless, his ex-girlfriend is already a giving and modest person.

She’s conflicted and sees herself as gray. She think she’s the same as he is but is able to hide it. However, he reveled in his selfishness and sees himself as the worst person in the room. He takes the blame for destroying the relationship. Everybody defines the negatives in themselves differently. (“And ah, when you work it out I’m worse than you/Yeah, when you work it out I wanted to/And ah, when you work out where to draw the line/Your guess is as good as mine”).

Nonetheless, she believes her own self-centeredness helped end the relationship, too. (“Don’t ever say you’re on your way down when/God gave you style and gave you grace”). He consoles her and tells her she’s not a bad person until the song is finished.

Both people in the song are mature, responsible adults taking blame and self-examining their own pre-conceived notions of themselves. Perception is not reality, as they talk and see each other through the other’s eyes. Since they’ve realized they are not the people they thought they were, they want to change.
